Introduction
CourseWeb.seas.ucla.edu* is the course management system for
the Henry Samueli School of Engineering and Applied Science.
It provides
students, instructors and TAs with a consistent
and convenient interface to all of their HSSEAS class websites,
as well as allow
the school to collect essential ABET and evaluation/survey information.
Highlights of CourseWeb:
- Students, instructors and TAs logon once (using either their BOL,
UID/PIN or SEASnet account) to courseweb.seas.ucla.edu to access
all their HSSEAS class websites.
- Instructors and TAs can easily post class syllabus/materials/assignments,
email class, view class rosters and make class announcements/calendar events.
- Instructors and TAs can easily change the access restriction for each
feature of their class website to be accessible by enrolled students,
UCLA community or the world. By default, only enrolled students can
access all of the class features.
- Students can submit assignments. The assignment due dates are
automatically added to the class calendar.
- Students, instructors and TAs can view past email messages sent by their instructor/TA(s).
- Class forums featuring private groups, email notifications,
file uploads and many other features.
- ABET assessment tools and surveys.
- Course evaluation/survey system, including the templates for OID's
Evaluation of Instruction forms.
- Instructors and TAs can upload files from any of their past class websites
in CourseWeb.
- Link to MyUCLA's gradebook for each class.
- Link to MyUCLA's Turnitin for each licensed professor.
- Class chatroom/IM tool utilizing Jabber Instant Messaging technology.
- COMBINED class sections, which has the following benefits:
- Sections share class forum
- Email Class Roster can email both sections at once
- Both sections share the materials and assignments sections
- ABET Assessment is done at once for both sections
- Both sections share calendar events and announcements
Overall, it will give you a single place to manage both multiple class sections.
However, some implications are that since combined class sections share everything.
If the pace or material taught in one section differs from another,
there can be problems.
* Many ideas for CourseWeb were from the direct input
from faculty, staff, TAs, and students of HSSEAS. CourseWeb will
continue to be improved and tailored to the need of HSSEAS community;
therefore, your suggestions and comments are greatly appreciated and
valued.
